Women and the Church: Liturgical Decisions of the Holy Synod of Antioch

Liturgical Decisions of the Holy Synod of Antioch

This announcement was published in the St. Nina Quarterly, Volume 1, No. 4.

Quoted from the latest issue of The Word [Sept 1997, p. 33], the publication of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese: The Holy Synod of Antioch (patriarchate) made several liturgical decisions [at their meeting, May 26-7, 1997]:

The Synod affirmed the God-given value of women in the Church and ordered that liturgical texts which imply otherwise be corrected.

The Holy Synod discussed certain matters which touch the lives of women and decided that women and men should be treated equally concerning their participating in divine services and receiving the sacraments. Whatever references are in the liturgical books that women are unclean and tainted should be abolished. They can enter the church and receive communion at any time. This necessitates a new look at liturgical texts.
